Jewelry Risks – 3 Summer Risks to Avoid
Jewelry risks. If you’ll be by the beach, pool, or in the garden, here are 3 summertime jewelry risks and what you can do to protect your jewelry.
1. Bling and the Beach?
Even silky fine beach sand can scratch just about any jewelry. Imagine the damage that climbing rugged rocks along the shore could inflict on a treasured ring or bracelet. Certain gems – diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and a few others – do have greater hardness but will still see unnecessary wear and tear. Even a diamond can be chipped so choose wisely where and when you’ll wear your beautiful jewelry, and it will stay beautiful longer.
What you can do: Leave fine jewelry home on beach days, climbing trips and even when just playing in the yard. If possible, keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case, or in a box with compartments and dividers to prevent pieces from scratching each other.
2. Leave Rings Out of it (the Garden, that is).
I know, I know! We used to wear gloves in the garden too. Still do! But have you tried thinning carrots while wearing gloves? Off they come! Besides, those grimy gloves are as good as sandpaper after only a short roll-up-your-sleeves stint in the rich garden dirt. Even while supposedly protected by gloves, gems and settings can be scratched or otherwise damaged during gardening, or similar enticing activities.
What you can do: Take your ring off before heading to the garden. We recommend adding a cup- hook to a handy yet discrete location and leave your rings there before you head out.
3. Can I wear my ring in the pool?
Chlorine and salt water are risky for fine jewelry! Chlorine is golds worst enemy by the way it attacks the alloys in the metal mixture. Repeated exposure can cause permanent damage to your jewelry. Remove all jewelry before going into a hot tub, swimming pool, or salt water.
What you can do: Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place on pool and beach days. Don’t risk a frolicking tumble in the surf that might whisk a beloved jewel into the waves forever.
How we can help: Bring pieces you know you’ll be wearing a lot this summer to have a complimentary inspection and cleaning ahead of the season and again after the season. We can help you keep them safe and looking great. You should also have your jewelry insured in case of loss or damage. Read more about Appraisals.
