Our Retipping & Repronging Process

repronging

Repairing prongs is never just a technical fix—it’s often about safeguarding a piece tied to memories, milestones, and family history. At Brown Goldsmiths, we approach each repair with that in mind, balancing careful craftsmanship with thoughtful judgment.

Some pieces only need retipping—carefully rebuilding worn or thinned prong tips to renew their hold on a gem. Others require repronging—removing and replacing prongs entirely when wear or damage has gone too far for a simple repair. We assess each setting individually, choosing the approach that keeps your gemstone secure while staying true to the piece’s original character.

Our process is deliberate and thorough:

1. Comprehensive Inspection
We examine the entire piece, not just the affected prongs, evaluating the setting, remaining metal, and overall wear.

2. Prong Assessment
We determine whether the prongs need retipping or full repronging, based on how much metal remains and how well it can be restored to securely hold the gemstone.

3. Setting Evaluation
We check that your existing gem is undamaged and properly seated, and confirm it can be safely held in place once the prongs are repaired.

4. Precision Retipping & Repronging
Using techniques suited to the setting’s design, we either rebuild the worn prong tips (retipping) or remove and replace the prongs entirely (repronging), ensuring both security and proper alignment.

5. Refinishing & Polishing
The piece is refined and polished so the repaired prongs blend seamlessly with the original design.

6. Final Security Check
Before returning your jewelry, we thoroughly test the setting to ensure long-term durability and confident wear.

Professional Ring Retipping & Repronging

Prongs are the guardians of your gemstones, quietly holding them in place day after day. Over time, normal wear can thin, weaken, or damage these small but essential components, putting your diamonds and gemstones at risk.

Our expert jewelers restore worn prongs through professional retipping and repronging services, reinforcing the security of your setting while preserving the beauty of your ring. Whether a single prong needs attention or an entire setting requires rebuilding, we carefully evaluate the piece and recommend the most appropriate solution.

We commonly perform:

  • Prong retipping to rebuild worn metal
  • Repronging damaged or broken settings
  • Head and setting restoration
  • Preventative maintenance for engagement rings
  • Vintage and heirloom ring restoration
  • Diamond and gemstone security inspections

Every repair is completed with the goal of protecting your gemstones, extending the life of your jewelry, and maintaining the original character of the piece.

The majority of our retipping and repronging work is completed right here in our Freeport workshop, ensuring quality and consistency.

Costs vary based on the type of metal, size, quality, and any additional repair work needed. We provide clear estimates after evaluating your jewelry.

We are fully insured, and your jewelry is on our premises while it is with us. Any help in assigning it a value is greatly appreciated. If you don’t have any idea, not to worry! Our trained professionals will be able to assign a declared value for our insurance.

You can expect a 3-4 week turn around time typically. However, during certain times of the year, we experience seasonal spikes in repair work, specifically around the holidays. Also, sometimes due to the extent of your repair, the turnaround might be a bit longer.
