Jewelry is not automatically covered on most homeowner’s insurance policies and often must be listed as separate items based on an appraisal performed by a qualified professional. At Brown Goldsmiths, our staff appraisers include two of only three Certified Gemologist Appraisers with the American Gem Society in the State of Maine. Should your jewelry be lost or stolen, the appraisal is used as a basis for facilitating a proper replacement. It is critical that the appraisal document consist of detailed and accurate information with photographs, when appropriate.
We generally assume that an appraisal is needed for items over $500, but this figure varies according to each insurance company. When in doubt, ask your agent. Depending on the complexity and number of items, an appraiser may need to keep your jewelry for sufficient time to gather thorough information. Fees are relative to the amount of time required to appraise.
